Improve Your Putting - Reading the Break of the Green to Take Strokes Off Your Game

The ability to read the break of the green can take a lot of strokes off your golf game. Improving your putting is the best way to lower your golf scores but you can teach yourself to see the contours of the green without actually being on the putting surface.

This may sound like an odd approach to improving your green reading skills, but try it for a while and I think you will agree that it really helps.

At the sporting goods section of many department stores you can find a set of Bocce balls. Bocce is normally played on a manicured grass court but it doesn't have to be. In my area there is actually a league that plays what is termed "Extreme Bocce". Instead of playing on a grass court that is extremely flat, you can play on any terrain available. To improve your green reading skills, uneven terrain is preferred.

The object of Bocce ball is to toss a small target ball called a palino and then to roll the bigger heavier Bocce balls as close to the palino as possible. For green reading practice, the palino would be the golf cup and the Bocce balls represent the golf balls. By using uneven terrain, you can practice rolling the balls to "break" towards the target ball. Not only will you be learning to see the break but this will help you judge your speed also. Both skills are vital to improving your putting skills.

The huge advantage to using Bocce balls is that you can work on your skills without needing a manicured green. You can play in your yard or a park or anywhere else you can think of and still gain necessary practice to "train" your eyes to see the contours of the surface, much like putting on a green.

For an added bonus, Bocce ball is a fun game that you can play with family or friends, even if they aren't golfers. Some care is required though because Bocce balls are very hard and hurt if you get hit. For this reason don't play around innocent bystanders. Click this link for other cool tips.
